Losing a job creates two separate questions: whether you qualify for unemployment benefits, and whether your application contains enough information to be processed. A calculator only estimates an amount; it cannot establish eligibility or submit a claim for you.
Check the deadline and your circumstances first
The Department’s unemployment-benefit guidance gives a twelve-month application window after termination of service. Apply promptly rather than waiting until the end of that window. Older documents may still show six months; use the newer qualifying-conditions reference below and confirm your circumstances with UIF.
Employer termination or the expiry of a contract can qualify, subject to the other conditions. Do not assume that dismissal for misconduct automatically disqualifies you. Voluntary resignation and absconding generally do not qualify, unless constructive dismissal is proven. You must register as a work-seeker, and entitlement depends on your contribution credits. A voluntary severance arrangement needs specific supporting paperwork.
Maternity, illness and other benefits are separate claim types. This guide addresses unemployment claims, not all UIF applications.
Build a small claim folder
Prepare your identity document, employer’s UI-19, salary schedule and banking details. The Department’s checklist also refers to a work-seeker registration and continuation paperwork. Confirm the current forms with your Labour Centre or the official portal.
Create a personal record with four columns:
| Item | What you have | What is missing | Who you asked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employment dates | Contract and termination letter | Any unexplained gap | Former employer |
| Earnings record | Recent payslips | Salary schedule | Payroll |
| Employer declaration | UI-19 copy | Incorrect termination reason | Payroll / UIF |
| Banking information | Your account details | Required verification | Bank / UIF |
This is an organisational checklist, not an official application form. Keep the folder private; it contains sensitive identity and financial information.
Use an official channel
The uFiling website currently directs benefit applicants to UIF Online. Check the official address before entering personal information. If online registration does not work for you, ask a Labour Centre for assistance.
Keep the application acknowledgement and reference number. A submitted application is not the same as an approved claim. Avoid paying someone who promises approval or asks you to disclose a one-time password.
Follow up with a specific question
If nothing changes, ask which item is outstanding rather than simply asking when payment will arrive. For example:
My unemployment application reference is [reference]. Please confirm whether the employer declaration and salary schedule have been received, and identify any information still needed from me.
Use placeholders only when drafting; send the actual reference through an official channel, not in public comments. Record the date and answer so you can follow up consistently.
Follow UIF’s continuation instructions and report changes in your employment or income. Do not assume that one application authorises ongoing payments indefinitely.
What an estimate can—and cannot—tell you
Use the UIF calculator to explore an illustrative benefit amount. Your declared earnings, contribution history and previous claims can affect the official outcome. The estimate is not proof of eligibility and does not guarantee a payment date.
If your contribution history appears incomplete, use our contribution-history checklist to organise the records you need to discuss with UIF and your employer.
If your application is declined
Request the reason and information about the applicable appeal process from UIF. Do not assume that a missing document and a rejected eligibility decision require the same remedy. The official UIF contacts page is the starting point for current enquiry and complaint channels.
